How to make the present tense negative

There are four things to think about when making the present tense negative.


1. What's the subject? Is it singular or plural?
2. Which helping verb is correct? Do or does?
3. Add the negative "not."
4. Use the simple form for the main verb.

Here are two sentences. One is singular and the other is plural.

    The computer doesn't work. (singular)
    The computers don't work. (plural)


Do you see the difference between them?

Directions: To make the present tense verb negative, write the correct form of the helping verb and the main verb in the space provided. Use contractions.
