Hello Students,
Learning English is not easy, but if you work at it, you should be able to meet your goals.
Here are five things you can do this summer to learn English or improve the English that you already know:
1. Make a plan to achieve your
goals: Do you want to focus on grammar, vocabulary, reading, pronunciation, conversation? All seven levels of grammar instruction include checklists that you can print out and keep by your computer. Having a plan
of some sort helps you focus your mental energy.
2. Stick with your plan.
Find one time during the day when you can work on your plan and to it
every day. Language skills must be practiced every day for at least an
hour or two.
3. Work on your vocabulary. This should always be a part of your daily routine. In the Word of the Day section
of the website, a new word is added or updated every day! Many of
these words are small and represent basic vocbulary, but that's one of
the keys to American English. Americans prefer the small words. Small
words show up in slang, idioms, expressions, etc. If you are
overlooking the small words in English, you are going to miss the boat!
Don't miss the boat.
4. Keep a notebook and a folder with anything that you print
out from the internet. A notebook? Yes. It's actually necessary
to write when you learn. Clicking a mouse isn't going to help you. You
have to write! Anyone who has followed my website to learn English will
tell you that writing helps you remember what you have learned. Use the
folder for organizing quizzes or exercises. Review printed material and
notes daily.
5. Don't quit!
If you want to learn something badly enough, you can't quit. You must
continue no matter what. I, too, have goals as a learner. There are
three things that I want to learn how to do: play guitar, speak German,
and become a better writer. I have to work on all three of those
things--constantly. But it's fun!
Learning should be fun and not frustrating. I hope the website is helping you achieve your goals and avoid frustration.
Make this the summer when you really learn English well. I'm going to focus on the Blue Level in June, so if you know anyone who wants to learn really basic English, tell him or her to sign up on the
website, and visit the blog every day.
+ There's a new chat room. See how you like it. I should have more control over this one. If there are problems there, let me know.
+ There's a new video for the word "well" and a past participle. If you can put these two kinds of words together properly, it will sound as though you have well-developed English skills.
That's all for now.
Have a good day!
Your teacher,
Paul
PEACE!
